What we did with £12 billion worth of Iraqi
oil revenues
The first thing we did after we invaded Iraq was to take control of
their oil. Well obviously, I mean that was the whole point. I said we
should just flat out take it, but Dick thought we oughta make some kind
of token gesture like we was paying for it, so it wouldn’t look
quite so bad an all. So what we did was we sent $12 billion dollars
worth of hundred dollar bills in on few aeroplanes and washed our hands
of the matter. Nobody’s quite sure where it went, but then who
cares. Retired Admiral David Oliver who was financial adviser to the
Coalition Provisional Authority head Paul Bremner put it best when he
was questioned about it by the B.B.C World service. When asked what
happened to $8.8 billion dollars of the money he replied:
"I have no idea. I can't tell you whether or not the money went
to the right things or didn't - nor do I actually think it's important."
Q: "But the fact is billions of dollars have disappeared without
trace."
Oliver: "Of their money. Billions of dollars of their
money, yeah I understand. I'm saying what difference does it make?"
